Rangoon Under Security Clampdown After Bomb Blast

Press Release: Terry Evans

26 September 2008

Rangoon is under a security clampdown following a small bomb blast yesterday. A dozen people were injured in Thursday morning's explosion at a bus stop in front of the former capital's City Hall.

On the eve of the first anniversary of the junta's brutal crackdown on last year’s monk-led "Saffron Revolution", there is mounting speculation that the bombing was orchestrated by Burma's feared Military Intelligence (MI) in order to justify a massive security operation.

Informed sources in Rangoon anticipate MI raids on the homes of pro-democracy activists, particularly youth members of the National League for Democracy, the opposition party led by detained Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
