UN Concerned By Rising Tensions In Guinea-Bissau
Ban deeply concerned about rising tensions in Guinea-Bissau
11 August 2008 - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today expressed his deep concern over the mounting political and security tensions in Guinea-Bissau, where the President swore in a new Government on Saturday following a failed coup attempt by military officers in the West African nation.
"This situation occurs at a time when preparations for legislative elections in November are under way and progress is being made to engage the international community to help meet the country's priority peacebuilding goals, including its fight against drug trafficking," a spokesperson for Mr. Ban said in a statement.
"The Secretary-General calls on all national stakeholders to work cooperatively and peacefully together in the national interest and in full respect of the rule of law," the statement added.
Mr. Ban also reaffirmed the UN's readiness to continue to support any constructive efforts that the Government and people of Guinea-Bissau undertake towards promoting peace and development and the stabilization of their country.
The world body is supporting the country rebuild after a brutal civil war - in which thousands were killed, wounded or forced from their homes - through the UN Peacebuilding Support Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNOGBIS).
