Fiji Government seeks fair level of governance through electoral reforms - Tikoduadua

Jul 29, 2008 - "We do everything to create an environment that is conducive for you to be able to come in and exercise your rights". "We don't determine how you vote and where you go to vote".

These remarks were made by the Permanent Secretary for Justice, Electoral Reform, Public Enterprises and Anti-Corruption; Mr Pio Tikoduadua at the inauguration of the Elections Workshop in the North last week (24.07.08).

Mr Tikoduadua warmly welcomed and congratulated the participants for their attendance in a large number.

The Business Processes Re-engineering workshop being the fourth of its kind was not the first occasion where Mr Tikoduadua had addressed the participants.

"There really is no need for me to emphasize further the criticalness of the work that we are going to do for the conduct of elections", he said.

"The extent and the decree of the confidence that you put into the kind of work you do will allow the people of Fiji to exercise their rights properly" PS Justice said.

Mr Tikoduadua said the Office of the Supervisor of Elections, the Electoral Commission and the Government dictate and prepares policies that allow the participants to do their work.

On the same note, Permanent Secretary for Electoral Reforms said there are some very significant developments with regards to the issues of elections in Fiji and it is probably the most current topic in terms of debates that is happening around in the country at all different levels of the society.

While addressing the participants of the Workshop he said "The main purpose of conducting such workshops is to capture those lessons and the critical pieces of information that you have to allow Government to include in its functions".

He stressed on the rights of the citizens saying "that right is for them to be able to decide under their own personal choice and with no pressure whatsoever to be able to decide for the kind of governance they want".

"That is the whole issue of electoral process and we are only facilitators" he added.

He concluded with the words that Government wants us to prepare ourselves in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude and to go out and prepare for an environment that will create for Fiji a fair level of governance.
