Foreign Office Minister welcomes appointment of new UN High Commissioner for human rights
In a response to the announcement by the UN Secretary General today that he has appointed Navanethem Pillay as UN High
Commissioner for Human Rights, Foreign Office Minister Lord Malloch-Brown said:
"I very much welcome this appointment. The High Commissioner for Human Rights plays a vital role in helping the UN and
its member states deliver their human rights obligations and in drawing attention to important human rights issues
across the globe. The choice of Ms Pillay is an excellent one. She has a strong record of driving forward issues of
human rights during her time as President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and is highly regarded as a
person of great integrity coupled with strong leadership skills.
"The UK has consistently been a strong supporter of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. We look
forward to working with Ms Pillay to continue and enhance the support we give to the work done by the Office."
