Fiji impresses crowd at 10th Festival of Pacific Arts

'Kabu ni Vanua' the Fiji delegation meke group to the 10th Festival of Pacific Arts were among the first to perform to a crowd of around 200 at the Utulei Beach pavilion this afternoon in Pagopago.

Performing under blue skies a first since the arrival of the delegation, the group gave the audience a glimpse of the energy and vibrancy of performances expected from the delegation.

Kabu ni Vanua dancer, 21 year old, Christina Soderberg said she was excited to be performing at the festival.

"This is the first time for me to attend the arts festival and I'm more excited than nervous. We've performed in Fiji at the meke competition and so I'm used to performing to a large crowd", Christine said.

An Australian tourist from a visiting cruise liner commented on how the female meke performers looked so regal even before their performance.

Fiji Arts Council Director and delegation coordinator Ms Letila Mitchell said it was great to see the energy at the performance this morning.

"The team is working great together and we are pulling together to make things happen,"Ms Mitchell added.

The Minister for Education, Culture, Heritage and the Arts Filipe Bole had earlier stated that he was very impressed with the groups performance at the opening ceremony last night (Tuesday night Fiji time).

The delegation booth was also set up this morning at the Samoana High School grounds selling Fiji artifacts as well as showing mat weaving and masi making.
