Fiji: Development Plans For Eastern Division

Development plans for Eastern Division
Several development prospects are in the pipeline for the eastern division with emphasis on creating sustainable commodity industries.
This was relayed to the Department of Information by the Commissioner Eastern Mr Tomasi Tui who outlined the strategic development plans focusing on provinces like Rotuma, Lau, Macuata, Kadavu and Lomaiviti.
"We are negotiating with Tuvalu in establishing exporting markets with Rotuma and local produce such as dalo, cassava, watermelon has already been exported the upgrading of the Rotuma airstrip is in the pipeline with emphasis on capacity building," Mr Tui said.
He highlighted for Lau and Macuata provinces, rural outer island programmmes such as the establishment of copra mills and encouraging communities to branch out to small scale businesses.
In Lomaiviti, local graduates have been teamed up to form a strategic plan after a socio-economic survey is conducted.
One of the key issues for Lomaiviti is to implement tourist attractions.
"Identifying soil types to grow commodities such as yaqona and dalo is encouraged for Kadavu and development of roads is also emphasised," he said.
He added that the strategic development plan for Kadavu has been completed.
