UK Prime Minister Inspired By Climate Challenge
British PM Inspired By Climate Challenge
A tough economic climate should drive Britain's commitment to become more energy efficient, the PM has said writing in the Guardian today.
Under Government plans, the UK will cut its carbon emissions by at least 60% by 2050. The economic benefits of the transformation will be £3 trillion and provide 25 million jobs by 2050, Mr Brown says in a special supplement to promote the Guardian's Climate Change Summit.
"We know the countries and companies that develop the technologies and services first will gain the richest global rewards.
"So I am convinced our low-carbon policies will be a source of new growth for Britain, creating thousands of new British businesses and export opportunities, and hundreds of thousands of new "green collar" jobs."
The PM explained that nuclear power would be part of the country's energy supply into the 21st Century. He said it was a controversial but stark reality that "must be faced".
"With renewable energy at its feasible limit by 2020, if we do not replace nuclear capacity, its place will be taken by coal or gas, increasing emissions. We cannot allow this, so we will go ahead, creating around 100,000 jobs."
Pushing for higher fuel efficiency standards for cars would save the average British motorist £500 a year in fuel costs, and would accelerate the introduction of revolutionary new car technologies. Mr Brown said he wants to see the development of hybrid and electric vehicles throughout the car market.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn is due to speak at the event at the Business Design Centre today.
