A-G meets Sir Paul and the EU delegation on the Rule of Law

The Attorney-General, Minister for Justice, Electoral Reform, Public Enterprises and Anti-Corruption, Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum this morning (02/07/08) met Sir Paul Reeves and the European Expert Mission ("Mission") on the Rule of Law.

Sir Paul is in the country as a result of a letter that was written by His Excellency the President to both the Secretary-Generals of the United Nations and the Commonwealth requesting their joint support to convene a forum to discuss the reformation of the electoral system.

"The meeting went very well. We had very useful discussions this morning. We welcome Sir Paul Reeves because of his history with Fiji."

The Attorney General added that Sir Paul was in Fiji to expedite the Government's effort to reform the country's electoral system.

Following this meeting, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also met with the Mission who consisted of Mr Bernard Pierre and the Rt. Hon. Sir Andrew Leggatt.

"We had very fruitful and frank discussions," he said.

He also said that he had passed onto the Mission a list of more names.

"The list that I handed to them consisted primarily of names of senior practitioners. These are persons who are relevant to the assessment of the Rule of Law."

Further Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said it was the prerogative of the Mission whether they would want to meet those persons.

Yesterday (01/07/08), the Attorney-General expressed the reservations Government had on the list of persons the Mission was scheduled to meet.
