UK's PM Gordon Brown Praises African Forest Fund
PM Praises African Forest Fund
Gordon Brown has offered his support to a new fund aimed at preserving one of the world's last remaining ancient forests.
At a meeting of African and world leaders and heads of NGOs in London today, the PM said that the work of the Congo Basin Forest Fund "will be one of our most effective brakes on climate change". The UK will contribute £50 million from its £800 million Environmental Transformation fund to Congo Basin countries, he said.
The PM said:
"Preserving forests benefits our entire planet, and i believe there is a growing acceptance by the international community that we need to put in place financial incentives to make the world's forests worth more standing than cut down."
