UK welcomes Abyei agreement in Sudan
The UK welcomes the agreement on 8 June between the Government of Sudan and the Government of Southern Sudan to resolve their differences over Abyei.
Foreign Office Minister Lord Mark Malloch Brown said,
"This progress in negotiations between the Government of Sudan and the Government of Southern Sudan to resolve the dispute over Abyei represents a significant step forward, in the face of continuing challenges in the search for lasting peace in Sudan. Both parties must continue to work together and with international partners to implement the agreement as quickly as possible, so that the people of Abyei can return to their homes.
We stand ready to support both the Government in Khartoum and the Government in Juba in their efforts to find long-term solutions to the issues which centre on Abyei, and to continue their progress towards full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Progress on wider national and regional issues is essential to efforts to bring peace to Darfur. We hope this encouraging news on Abyei will be followed soon by progress in relations between Sudan and Chad, following the 8 June meeting of the Dakar Contact Group."
