British PM Gordon Brown Offers Support To China

PM offers support to China

The Prime Minister has praised the efforts of the Chinese government following the Sichuan earthquake and offered the UK's support to deal with the aftermath of the tragedy.

Signing a book of condolence at the Chinese Embassy in London, the PM said the response of Premier Wen, the Chinese authorities and all those involved in the rescue operations had been "nothing short of magnificent". The UK will send shelters for 30,000 people and telecommunications equipment, at the request of the Chinese government, as part of a $4 million donation, he added.

The PM said:

"[The UK] will continue to do everything in our power to help the Chinese people at this time of grief and suffering.

"Our thoughts go to all people in China, our condolences to those families who have lost loved ones, and our support for all those who are suffering."
