World Youth Day’s search for Jesus down to final few
World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (WYD08) organisers today announced the few final young men in the running to play the part
of Jesus before His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
One of the final contenders will be chosen for the lead role in WYD08’s Stations of the Cross performance on Friday 18
July across various Sydney CBD locations.
The ‘Jesus hopefuls’ are:
1. Alfio Stutio Jr, 27, Homebush West
2. Chris Galletti, 25, Turramurra
3. Jesse Mowbray, 25, Warrimoo
4. Luke Shaw, 30, Chifley
The challenging task to select the right person for the coveted part now lies with Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of
Sydney and Bishop Anthony Fisher OP, WYD08 Coordinator.
“It is with enormous delight that we present the final Jesus hopefuls, each of whom brings to the table a unique
offering – whether it be a physical likeness to Jesus, a strength of character, acting experience or a combination of
the three!” said Fr Franco Cavarra, Director of the Stations of the Cross production.
“Already there has been extensive interest from around the world to see who will play this leading role and we are
confident that Australia will select a stellar cast to showcase our young talent and Sydney’s magnificent surroundings.”
The Stations of the Cross will be telecast live to the world on Friday 18 July. At the 2002 World Youth Day in Toronto,
Stations of the Cross was watched by one billion viewers worldwide.
Roles including Mary, Pontius Pilate, Simon of Cyrene, the 12 Apostles, Roman Soldiers, religious authorities and a crew
of extras are also in the final selection stages, following a series of casting calls.
The main cast of around 30 actors is set to be announced within the next fortnight.
Fr Franco Cavarra brings a wealth of professional experience to the WYD08 team. He has directed operas internationally
and around Australia, including at the Sydney Opera House. He is founding member of the longstanding Melbourne
International Festival.
Sydney will host the 23rd World Youth Day from 15 – 20 July this year. Organised by the Catholic Church but open to all,
WYD08 will mark the first visit by Pope Benedict VXI to Australia.
