ACT Students To Become Future ADF Leaders
What: Eighteen year twelve graduates from Canberra and the surrounding region will be appointed to the Australian
Defence Force at a special ceremony prior to commencing studies at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)
Where: ADFA, off Northcott Drive, Campbell. Media are requested to meet at the main ADFA roundabout for a pre-event
briefing and escort to the venue.
When: 8.40am, Thursday, 24 January 2008.
Who: Rear Admiral Russ Crane, AM, CSM, RAN, Deputy Chief of Navy, will officiate. Family and friends of the
appointees will be in attendance.
Special Interest: Alistair Weir, a Marist College graduate, has won the only place in Canberra for an Air Force
armament engineer to study at ADFA in 2008. Luke Faragher, a Radford College graduate, has won a highly
competitive place as a General Service Officer, Aviation Cadetship with the Army, the only Canberra student to be
accepted to ADFA as an Army pilot. Background: ADFA provides training and education for the future leaders of the
Australian Defence Force.
The ADFA appointment ceremony is a proud moment as successful candidates mark the conclusion of a highly competitive
selection process, and begin their service life. Following the appointment ceremony, the group will begin their training
with more than 350 young men and women from around Australia.
As Midshipmen and Officer Cadets, they will spend the next three to four years undertaking a program combining military
studies and training with the Navy, Army or Air Force with undergraduate degrees in Business, Science, Arts, Information
Technology or Engineering through the University of New South Wales at ADFA.
They will receive a full time salary while they complete their training and studies. On graduation they will receive a
degree that is recognised throughout Australia and overseas and be guaranteed a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force.
