Solomon Is. Attends Bali Climate Change Conference

A delegation from Solomon Islands is also attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference which began this week on Monday 3rd December.

The two weeks Conference is attended by 192 Parties of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change and 176 Parties of the Kyoto Protocol.

The purpose of the Conference is to address the warming of the global environment that is now negatively impacting on the world especially to Small Islands Developing States such as Solomon Islands.

The 1992 Climate Change Convention was established to reduce harmful gases emissions into the atmosphere, that is making the environment warmer. The Kyoto Protocol on the other hand that was entered into force in 2005 spells out the target for developed countries to reduce the emission of harmful gases. The Protocol is due to expire in 2012.

The Conference is suppose to begin a negotiating road map to develop a post Kyoto arrangements.

Solomon Islands delegation is being led by Permanent Secretary of Environment and Conservation, Charles Viva supported by Director of Metrology, Chanel Iroi, officials from the Ministry of National Planning and Foreign Affairs.

Solomon Islands delegation includes representatives from International NGOs. Other NGO representatives are also attending the Conference as NGOs.

Beside the multilateral commitments, Solomon Islands is also will be attending other High Level events with the Chief Executive of the Global Fund on various national projects and with a group known as the Coalition of Rain Forest led by Papua New Guinea, made up of countries from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific.

Solomon Islands is one of the six countries of the world that has a rich coral and fish species. As part of the Coral Triangle, Solomon Islands is meeting with Philippines, Indonesian, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea on Coral cooperation.

The other portion of the delegation will attend the High Level event which begins in the latter half of next week. The Ministerial segment of the Conference will be attended by global leaders including the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Australia, President of Palau and Ministers from the region and the world.

Solomon Islands delegation on Monday applauded the Australian Government and Prime Minister for signing on the Kyoto protocol.
