Japan Quenches Thirst For Clean Water In Kirakira
Residents in the Makira Ulawa Provincial capital of Kirakira have received a Japanese funded Water Supply Project during a ceremony last Friday in Kirakira.
Supported through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Project (GGP), the SBD$360,000 project is aimed to rehabilitate the water supply system in Kirakira.
Kirakira residents have faced serious water supply shortage for many years caused by broken pipes.
Grassroots Project Coordinator of the Embassy of Japan Yosuke Sekiguchi said "The Government of Japan understands that Kirakira Town has been experiencing water problem for long time caused by leaking water pipes and reduced water pressure.
The problem causes serious difficulties for doctors and medical staffs of Kirakira Hospital to continue providing medical services to the patients without sufficient.
Mr Sekiguchi also said "it goes without saying that water is a vital part of the life of everyone throughout the world. Clean and continuous drinking water gives us good health and happiness. That's why the Government of Japan has decided to assist the effort of Makira-Ulawa Province and the people of Kirakira".
Provincial Secretary for Makira-Ulawa Province Mr Andrew Nanauoha said Kirakira residents appreciate the continuous support from the Government of Japan.
He said the successful completion of Kirakira Water Supply Project is followed by the Kirakira Hospital Upgrading Project which is also funded by the Government of Japan in 2004.
The ceremony was witnessed by the officers and staffs of Makira-Ulawa Provincial Government.
