British PM Visits Troops In Afghanistan

British PM Visits Troops in Afghanistan

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is on his first trip to Afghanistan, visiting troops at the main British military base in violent Helmand province.

Mr. Brown thanked the troops for their sacrifice before traveling to Kabul for meetings with top Afghan officials.

His visit came as NATO-led coalition forces reentered a Taliban stronghold in Helmand Province.

Coalition troops surrounded Musa Qala last week. NATO officials said Afghan troops entered the town Monday, after several militants were killed in an airstrike on a Taliban weapons supplier.

Taliban militants overran Musa Qala in February after British troops withdrew and handed over security responsibilities to local elders.

More than 6,000 Afghan and NATO soldiers are trying to restore civilian government to the town.
