Burns Creek Community Receives Love Gifts From Taiwan

The Burns Creek Community in the eastern outskirts of Honiara yesterday received a 'donation of love gifts' from the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Taiwanese Technical Mission (TTM) in Honiara.

The gifts included eight piglets, 10 bags of pig-feed, 30 bags of cement, 500kg of sweet potatoes, 300kg of pumpkins, 80 pieces of used iron sheets, 100 pieces of used timber, 5kg of nails, 5 pieces of hammer and 100 footballs.

They were handed over to the community in a presentation ceremony witnessed by the MP for East Honiara and Minister for Public Service, Mr Charles Dausabea, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Mr Severino Nuaiasi, Commissioner of Police, Mr Jahir Khan and the Deputy Commissioners of Police, Mr Peter Marshall and Mr Walter Kola and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Siapu.

ROC Ambassador, His Excellency George Chan told the community and the guests at the occasion that the donation symbolized 'a seed of hope' for a bright future for the recipients.

Ambassador Chan said the TTM started assisting the Burns Creek Community in pig and vegetable farming after the Commissioner of Police, Mr Khan invited him for a meeting with the community leaders in September following incidents of theft on the Taiwanese Technical Mission farm by youths from the community.

He said after a good hard talk with the community leaders, he pledged to assist their community in pig and vegetable farming if their youths stopped invading the TTM farm and the leaders agreed to that condition.

The Ambassador said for the past few months technicians from the TTM started their assistance to the community and it was an exciting experience for both parties.

"We are so pleased that the BBC (Burns Creek Community) responded to our proposal with a positive attitude and today we witness the sweet result.

"Satisfactorily our dream for this community has come true, as some farmers have sold corns from their farms to TTM to produce into pig-feed ...," he said.

Ambassador Chan said Taiwan's help is geared towards helping Solomon Islanders to be self-reliant rather than aid-dependent.
