False NZ Passport Arrest At Sydney Airport
A man will face Sydney Central Local Court today charged with using a cancelled foreign travel document while trying to leave Australia. The 66-year-old was charged under the Foreign Passports Law Enforcement and Security Act 2005.
Immigration authorities were alerted when the man tried to fly to Fiji from Sydney International Airport yesterday using a false New Zealand passport.
The arrest is the result of a joint investigation between the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, and New Zealand Police.
New Zealand Police investigated the use of fraudulently obtained passports after a 2005 audit by authorities revealed that a number of passports had been issued using the birth certificates of deceased New Zealanders.
The man will be charged with using a cancelled foreign travel document, which has a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment.
