Bianca Jagger: “dramatic change in direction” needed to combat climate change
World Future Council speaks up for future generations at UK launch
London 15th November. The World Future Council offically launched its UK operations at the Be the Change conference in
Central Hall, Westminster today.
Bianca Jagger, Chair of the WFC, said at the event that organisations like the World Future Council were vital to help
combat climate change.
“We must insist on a dramatic change in direction that goes way beyond the actions currently taken by governments. It is
crucial for organisations such as the World Future Council – that have the big picture in mind – to speak up for future
generations and to indicate appropriate measures that go to the root of such great problems.”
The World Future Council will focus on the threat of climate change in its first year of operation. Bianca Jagger said
that it was becoming clear that rich countries need to take vigorous measures to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels
and that a new energy system was required to provide a sense of climate justice.
Bianca Jagger:
“Climate Justice means giving the poorer countries privileged access to renewable energy technologies to help them with
truly sustainable development. Only if we can show the plausibility and benefits of development without fossil fuels,
can we expect third world countries to initiate their own emissions reductions”
At the present time, we are burning a million years worth of fossil fuel deposits each year. Is makes the unprecedented
standards of living for a large portion of people in rich countries possible.
The World Future Council works with policy makers, civil society groups and intergovernmental organisations to identify,
promote and help implement best policies, laws and agreements.
Through the experience, connections and skills of its members, the WFC is uniquely positioned to play a catalytic role
in helping to prevent climate chaos and bridge the “implementation gaps” which currently delay urgently needed action.
The Council focuses on what is necessary rather than what seems politically possible.
WFC Founder, Jakob von Uexküll said,
“We face a new hierarchy of global threats. If we do not succeed in limiting climate chaos, our earth will no longer be
habitable for most of its inhabitants. It is not possible to negotiate with melting glaciers or to re-schedule
environmental debts.”
The World Future Council works to change the rules of global governance by raising key international challenges from the
political-economic to the ethical level.
Bianca Jagger:
“Affirming the principle of ecological debt we need to acknowledge the entitlement of the victims of climate change to
have their ecosystems restored – and to establish legal precedents to that effect.”
The WFC designs its policy and project recommendations as global campaigns that involve parliamentary hearings,
legislative assistance, tailored mailings, events, and a website (www.onlinepact.org) - a multimedia clearinghouse for
information on policies to change the world. As the voice of future generations, the World Future Council, in its
campaigns, speaks up for those who cannot stand up for their rights.
The World Future Council is a global forum of 50 respected personalities who give voice to the shared ethical values of
citizens worldwide. The Council works closely with policy-makers, civil societies and business to identify and implement
best policies to protect the rights of future generations.
