UNESCO Unanimously Endorses Resolution on Holocaust Remembrance
Today in Paris, the 193 member states of the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted by
consensus a resolution promoting remembrance of the Holocaust.
The resolution, submitted by the United States, Russia, Australia, Canada, and Israel, and co-sponsored by 65 other
UNESCO member states, clearly demonstrates the refusal of UNESCO's member states to countenance any form of Holocaust
denial.
The resolution asks UNESCO's Director General, Koichiro Matsuura, to consult with United Nations Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon on the Secretary-General's Holocaust education outreach program with a view to identifying how UNESCO could
promote Holocaust awareness and combat all forms of Holocaust denial.
As the UN's lead agency for education, UNESCO plays a major role in building peace and tolerance through education.
Educating children of the world about the facts of one of the darkest moments in history is fundamental to ensuring that
we avoid such tragedies in the future. UNESCO's 34th General Conference concluded this week in Paris.
