British PM outlines UK entry measures

The British Prime minister Gordon Brown has outlined changes to the UK entry system to regulate the movement of workers from abroad.

Speaking on the GMTV programme this morning, the PM said that a points based system would be introduced to ensure that only skilled workers were able to come to the UK from outside the European Union.

The Government will also begin counting the exact numbers of foreign workers entering and leaving the UK and bring in ID cards for foreign nationals, he said.

The PM said:

"Over the next few months we've decided on changes that will make the system work in such a way that people can be sure that we're taking the action that is necessary and of course at the same time benefiting where we want to from the skills that people can bring to our country.

"If you look at the jobs situation as a whole there are six hundred thousand vacancies in the economy, I'm really keen to get British people to take up these vacancies."

The Prime Minister was responding to questions on immigration after the Government revised its figure for the increase in the number of foreign national workers since 1997 from 800,000 to 1.1 million. On today's programme Mr Brown said that changes to the qualifying system will come "in the next few months".
