Un Envoy Gambari Meets With Aung San Suu Kyi
Diplomats in Burma say that Ibrahim Gambari a senior U.N. envoy has met with Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Rangoon. It is reported that on Sunday he talked with Aung San Suu Kyi for a an hour at a government-run guest house.
The United Nations sent Gambari to Burma on Saturday after the military government ordered a violent crackdown on thousands of monks and other pro-democracy protesters earlier in the week.
The demonstrations began mid August after the government hiked fuel prices. The country's revered monks then took the lead in the demonstrations, turning them into a widespread protest against brutal military junta.
The Burmese Army have recently detained many of the monks accused of leading the protests and confined many others to their monasteries.
