Hindu Chaplain Zed Welcomes Catholics' Efforts

Hindu chaplain Zed welcomes Catholics' dialogue efforts

Reno (Nevada,USA): Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Reno, in a letter to religious leaders of various denominations and faiths of the area, has expressed commitment to dialogue and collaboration.

In this letter, he said that the recent document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Vatican should not be taken as the basis of religious intolerance or interpreted as the Catholic Church pulling back on its commitment to ecumenism and interfaith dialogue.

Reverend Calvo further wrote, "Given the state of our world and the challenges facing our society, our collaboration is vital for the common good. Despite our differences, we do share a common purpose."

"We have disagreed and do disagree on theological issues. In any meaningful religious dialogue, I do not expect any party to minimize or abandon his or her theological definitions, let alone convictions, simply to avoid disagreement. This would be falsely irenic and not lead to true, mutual understanding. Authentic dialogue is an arduous endeavor, built on honesty and respect," he added.

Catholic Diocese of Reno, established in 1931, covers 70,852 square miles spread across eleven Nevada counties in addition to Carson City.

Rajan Zed, well-known Hindu chaplain, and various other area religious leaders, have warmly welcomed the efforts of interfaith cooperation and dialogue of Bishop Calvo. Religion is very powerful and we must take it seriously. The community of the Church is an integral part of the world community, he added.

Zed further stated, " We are all looking for the truth. Let us learn from each other and live harmoniously with each other as we are headed in the same direction. With the help of the dialogue, we shall attempt to overcome prejudices, caricatures, and stereotypes."
