Burmese Generals Gag Opposition
Yesterday the Burmese military junta cut all phone lines to the headquarters of Burma's main pro-democracy party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), in a move designed to stem the flow of reports and images broadcast to the outside world.
The paranoid military regime has been shaken by recent public demonstrations over massive fuel price hikes, which are causing widespread hardship.
While the NLD's charismatic leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, remains under house arrest, many other key party members have also been detained or are in hiding following the civil disorder.
This latest clampdown on the NLD by the Burmese generals comes just weeks before the pro-democracy party's founding anniversary on 27 September.
