Unrest spreads in Burma
Anti-junta protests have spread to central Burma. Over the weekend the country's military rulers cracked down on
rebellious Buddhist monks.
Late last week Buddhist monks took to the streets in Pakokku, 530 kilometres north of Rangoon, in a protest against the
government's decision to double fuel prices last month and the recent arrests of more than 100 protestors in Rangoon.
On Friday the dissent had spread to nearby Aung-lan town, 515 kilometres north of Rangoon, where posters were put up
around the town encouraging another people power revolution.
In a rare move, Burma's state controlled media has admitted for the first time that the military regime had confronted
rebellious Buddhist monks in central Burma and dispersed the demonstration by firing over the heads of the monks.
Burmese Buddhist monks have a long history of political activism in Burma and united with students in the anti-military
demonstrations that rocked Burma in 1988.
