Sogavare congratulates Makira/ Ulawa Province
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has congratulated Makira/Ulawa Province on the celebration of their 25th anniversary of second appointed day celebrations and commended the province for its valuable contributions to national development.
In a hearty powerful speech in Kirakira yesterday, Mr Sogavare said the government and people of Makira deserved the commendation of the hardworking, peace-loving Solomon Islanders who wanted to see the country developed.
He said the province had contributed a lot to the social, political and economic development of the nation.
“Makira Ulawa Province featured prominently amongst provinces in our country that contributed an outstanding array of talents and leadership material in all sector of the economy and at all levels and arms of our government system.
“This is an achievement worthy of commendation,” Mr Sogavare said.
The Prime Minister cited the Governor General His Excellency Sir Nathaniel Waena and the late Solomon Mamaloni as examples of the provinces outstanding contributions to national leadership.
He said Sir Nathaniel’s commitment to the protection of Solomon Islands sovereignty when threatened by foreign forces placed him amongst great national leaders who deserved an unreserved national respect.
Mr Sogavare said the late Mamaloni would go down in national history as a true Solomon Islander, a down to earth nationalist and defender of the course of Solomon Islands.
He said Solomon Islands politics has never been the same since the passing on of ‘this great leader and statesman.’
The Prime Minister said as Makira Province was now another year older politically, it was placed with an enormous responsibility that required unwavering commitment to address the development aspirations of its people.
He said the role of the national and provincial governments in enhancing development was to provide an environment conducive to nation building.
“This is the essence of sustainable development that is driven from bottom-up., development that gives benefit to the people because they are actively involved in it.
“If we are not seeing this result then we must question our development strategies and the way we conduct ourselves as leaders of our people,” Mr Sogavare said.
The Prime Minister also reminded the province of the importance of unity amongst its different political factions.
He said disunity was the greatest enemy of success and progress and the provinces leaders must be mindful of that.
