UK Foot And Mouth Update: 2nd Case Confirmed
Foot and Mouth update: zones amended as second case is confirmed in Surrey
Laboratory tests this morning confirmed the presence of Foot and Mouth Disease in the cattle herd where culling began yesterday as a slaughter on suspicion.
The outbreak is located on a farm within the existing main larger Protection Zone which included the first infected premises. Chief Veterinary Officer, Debby Reynolds, ordered the slaughter of the cattle on suspicion of disease based on clinical symptoms.
Minor changes have now been made to the Protection Zones (PZ) and Surveillance Zone (SZ) in the area. The new zones can be found at www.defra.gov.uk/footandmouth
The Secretary of State Hilary Benn also agreed today that due to the exceptional circumstances, payment would be made for secondary cleansing and disinfection on the two infected premises.
Animal Health carries out the primary cleansing and disinfection of any infected premises in an outbreak for disease control purposes, as required by the Animal Health Act.
