Training Centre For Public Servants Officially Opened
The wife of the late Joses Sanga, Mrs Taeasi Sanga today joined the Prime Minister in opening the new training centre
for Solomon Islands public servants, the Institute for Public Administration and Management (IPAM).
The building has been named the Hon Joses W. Sanga IPAM Building in honour of the late Joses Sanga, the former Minister
for Public Service who passed away in May this year.
The Prime Minister, Manessah Sogavare, said the building marks another important milestone in the cordial working
relationship between the government and the Regional Assistance Mission.
"The late Joses Sanga was a strong advocate for the Institute for Public Administration and Management (IPAM). He
believed training was the best medicine to kick start effective government".
Today's launch marks the end of a three year RAMSI project to improve key government buildings including the Prime
Minister's Office and the IPAM building.
Mrs Sanga said it was a humbling experience for the Sanga family to have the building named in honour of the late Sanga.
"My late husband always spoke with passion about the idea that Solomon Islands public servants should have access to the
best training possible."
The Minister for Public Service and Deputy Prime Minister, Toswell Kaua, said IPAM aimed to train up a first class
public service so that they could be the driving force of future government programs.
"IPAM has already been able to provide training in both Honiara and the provinces", Mr Kaua said. "About 2000 public
servants have received training including senior executive development, records management and financial management."
The Minister said that although IPAM was under the Ministry of Public Service, it would be given a degree of autonomy,
and that legislation was currently being drafted to this effect.
Regional Assistance Mission Special Coordinator, Tim George, said the passing of the late Joses Sanga was a great loss
to this nation.
"In naming this building, it is hoped that IPAM and the activities of training the public servants of the future may
provide a lasting tribute - not only to the commitment, vision and leadership which the late Sanga brought to the task
of rebuilding the Solomon Islands Public Service, but to the very real sacrifices he made on behalf of his nation", Mr
George said.
"The completion of this project is a chance to acknowledge the progress which has been achieved through the close
partnership between Solomon Islands Government and the Regional Assistance Mission", Mr George said.
RAMSI has also provided assistance to IPAM to develop its capacity to provide high quality training. This included
teaching IPAM staff to independently design, deliver and evaluate training.
