Wounded Australian Soldier To Return Home
An Australian soldier wounded in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack during a vehicle patrol is to return to Darwin after he has completed his initial medical treatment.
The soldier suffered lower leg injuries including burns, lacerations and a broken ankle after an IED detonated alongside his vehicle near the town of An Nasariyah in the Dhi Qar Province on Monday evening.
The soldier is being treated in Baghdad and his medical assessment remains stable. Details of any future possible repatriation will be advised.
Two other personnel received less serious wounds in the attack that destroyed an Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) and damaged two more.
A member of the wounded soldier’s family is expected to travel to the Middle East under the Australian Defence Force’s Australians Dangerously Ill (AUSDIL) scheme. The two will travel back to Darwin next week.
AUSDIL exists to sponsor visits by next of kin, relatives or nominated persons to members of the ADF who have been hospitalised due to serious injury or illness.
Defence will not release the names of these members at this time as they remain on operations.
