Solomons Disaster Warning Tuned Down

Disaster Warning Tuned Down

The National Disaster Council (NDC) has withdrawn an alert warning to the people of Western and Choiseul Provinces.

A statement from the NDC Chairman Mr. Fred Fakarii said: “We’ve been advised by the Seismology Division this morning that tsunami threats to your communities has been downgraded and that you should go back to your villages.

“However, please take all necessary actions should there be another major earthquake.”

The chairman advised people in the affected area to keep listening to their radios for further information.

Mr. Fakarii continued: “To the people of Simbo, the Seismology Division has also advised that there is no immediate threat from the volcano on the island.”

People in the affected areas yesterday left their homes for higher grounds and spent last night in the open, most without any shelter.

The government through the NDC is mobilizing a team of some 40 people to go to the affected area to carry out ground assessment.

It is expected that government and non-government personnel will involve in the assessment.

So far 13 people were reported to have died but it is expected that the number could be more than 20.
