New to Niue: Companies Office online
The world’s smallest self-governing country has launched its Companies Office into cyberspace, marking the start of an online era for its limited liability companies, Registrar of Companies, Cark Barry announced today.
Clark Barry said Niue’s Companies Office website is a significant step forward in helping the nation reach its goal of economic self-reliance.
“The Niue Companies Office website is a boost to the economy and an asset to local businesses. Not only will the website contain a register of Niue companies, it will also provide information to people wanting to start their own business and or invest in the local economy.”
Clark Barry said the introduction of the limited liability company structure to Niue means people based locally and overseas will find doing business easier in the country.
“The new Companies Office and its website will give Niue businesses continuity with business communities in other countries. Investors in Niue companies are now able to become shareholders, which will bring increased investment opportunities. Selling a business, or passing a business on to other parties as a separate entity, will also become simpler processes.”
Other features of the website include information on starting a business in Niue, directors’ obligations, an electronic search function and a wide range of customer support services.
The format of the website is similar to that of the New Zealand Companies’ Office, which has been assisting the Government of Niue to set up the Companies Office within Niue’s Treasury Department, and has developed an electronic Companies register which will be accessible on line.
Representatives from the Ministry of Economic Development have spent time in Niue briefing government officials, speaking to business leaders, the media and the public on the implementation of the new Companies Act and its associated electronic register. They have also facilitated operational training of local Companies Office staff.
Niue’s Companies Office is a result of the new (Niue) Companies Act which came into force on 1 August. The Government of Niue, New Zealand’s Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and NZAid have been overseeing the implementation of the Act.
