Allegations of Replacement for Commander for the Fiji Military Forces
Contrary to allegations by the Head of the Fiji Military Forces, I can state categorically that Australia has not been asked to provide a replacement for the Commander of the Fiji Military. The issue of who commands the Fiji Military Forces is a matter for the Fiji Government.
I am well aware of tensions between Commodore Bainimarama and the Fiji Government, but this is a situation that must be resolved by the two parties involved.
Australia welcomes the re-election of the Qarase Government and I urge the people of Fiji to accept the will of the voters and give the new government a chance to begin its work.
