LANCASTER, PA - This Thursday, May 4, 2006 Karl
Rove will come to the Host Resort in Lancaster County, PA to
speak at a fundraiser for US Senator and candidate Rick
Santorum. The Lancaster Coalition for Peace & Justice is
calling on area residents to join a vigil for peace and an
unwelcoming party for Mr. Rove.
Rove’s appearance at the Santorum fundraiser confirms reports that he is stepping back from policy oversight in order to focus on the mid-term elections. This raises questions as to what extent the GOP is distancing itself from failures of the Bush Administration.
Many are expected to join the unwelcoming party. The Lancaster Coalition for Peace & Justice recently turned out 700 people for the three-year anniversary of the Iraq War - the highest per capita turnout in the country. Bill Adams - father of SFC Brent Adams who was killed in Iraq in December- will be present on Thursday, mourning those killed in the Iraq War, and seeking to hold Mr. Rove and the Bush Administration accountable.
Rove was instrumental in constructing the falsehoods that sold the Iraq War. Before the war began, Rove chaired meetings of the Iraq Group, which was “charged with developing a strategy for publicizing the White House’s assertion that Saddam Hussein posed a threat to the United States,” according to CNN. Rove’s task force, in particular, contributed to writing and coordinating speeches by Bush administration officials drumming up Iraq’s purported nuclear threat. This threat, we now know, was nonexistent.
Mr. Rove is also the subject of an ongoing investigation concerning the possibly felonious disclosure of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame’s identity to Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper in retaliation for Plame’s husband Joseph Wilson’s criticisms of the administration’s use of pre-war Iraq intelligence. Last week Rove appeared before a federal grand jury for questioning for the fifth time.
The Lancaster Coalition for Peace & Justice is a grassroots network of organizations and individuals that formed in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq – over three years ago. LCPJ organizes educational events, vigils, protests and projects to amplify local voices for peace and justice, and to effect social change.
