PRESS RELEASE - Nomads Land Films'
Guerrilla Documentary The Art Of Flight To Reach Global Audience via Google Video (April 19 , 2006 - DUBAI) - The Art of
Flight, Davin Anders Hutchins' guerrilla documentary about Sudanese refugees in Cairo and America's failing policies in
the Middle East, will be made available free to a worldwide audience for a limited time in its entirety on Google Video
(video.google.com)
Screened at AFI Fest in Hollywood, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and Bangkok International Film Festival,
the film essentially summarizes the events leading up to the Dec. 2005 police massacre of Sudanese refugee protestors
outside UNHCR's office in Cairo.
"This film takes a hard look at how 25 years and billions of dollars of financial support for Egypt by the U.S. has
created an unsafe environment for Sudanese refugees and Egyptian citizens alike," says Hutchins.
The director secretly used camcorders and a laptop to direct and edit the film. The Art of Flight also features an
original score composed by Hutchins and Al Khafiyeen, a band of Sudanese refugees living in Cairo. The soundtrack is
available on many music download sites including iTunes (www.itunes.com) and Real Media's Rhapsody service
(www.real.com/rhapsody).
"If the Egyptian government knew what I was filming, I would have easily been arrested," says Hutchins. "I'm quite sure
this film will be banned in Egypt, but it doesn't matter. With Internet distribution, it can be beamed right into Egypt
via the Internet. I hope the film can shine a light on the repressive environment Hosni Mubarak has created and help the
U.S. change its stance towards Egypt."
The Art of Flight is one of the first new independent documentary films made available on Google Video
(http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6467988025807238754=th e+art+of+flight=true). Anyone wishing to view the film simply clicks on video.google.com and searches for The Art of Flight.
A copy of the film is also available on the Nomads Land Films website at: www.nomadslandfilms.com/presskit.htm .
Hutchins is currently general manager of Nomads Land Films. The company, which began with a laptop and camcorder kit in
a spare bedroom in Cairo,is now located in Dubai andproduces documentaries for international broadcasters. The Art of
Flight delves deep into questions about the nature of charity, the consequences of American empire and the price of
transience.
"This story isn't finished yet. Even with Darfur raging, apathy about Sudanese refugees runs high" says Hutchins. œThe
frustrating part is to go through festival screeners and channel executives, you almost never reach the audience who
cares most and can help change things on the ground. Google Video changes that. What matters most is that the refugees
who risked much to tellme their stories to me can have those stories heard by others.
