Cheney shooting shows dangers of hunters

Cheney shooting shows why State Forests should be free of hunters

The accidental shooting of another hunter by US Vice President Dick Cheney is a good example of why recreational hunters, with their crossbows, rifles and dogs, should be kept out of State Forests, said Greens MP and animal welfare spokesperson Lee Rhiannon today.

"Dick Cheney's misplaced shot is no great exception. Many such accidents occur in hunting," Ms Rhiannon said.

"The government's move to open up State Forests to hunters risks a far greater number of unintentional shootings, with both animal and human blood being shed.

"The hunter stacked Game Council must realise that broadening hunting opportunities threatens not only animal but also human life.

"It is time Premier Iemma showed his support for the environment and public safety by putting an end to hunting on public land," Ms Rhiannon said.
