Aust.: Minister should resign for flawed detention
Minister should resign for flawed detention and deportations of permanent residents
Australian Greens Senator Kerry Nettle slammed the Government for yet another scandal in the Immigration Department and urged the Government to immediately end the detention and deportation of permanent residents.
"The report by the Ombudsman is damning.
Yet again we find the
Immigration Department making
sloppy decisions based on wrong or scant information," said
Senator Nettle.
"The mandatory detention policy turns errors into tragedy because there is no outside review of the decision to detain a person. People should not be locked up for years or deported because of the Immigration Department's inability to make proper decisions.
"The
Greens call on the government to immediately cease using
Section
501 to deport permanent residents and comply with
recommendation number seven in the Ombudsman's
report.
"These flawed decisions have had a terrible impact on individuals and their families and the Minister should rectify and apologise for the damage done by these flawed decisions.
"Robert Jocovic is still in Belgrade because this Government is being stubborn.
"All the permanent residents affected by the poor decision making of this Government should be tracked down, offered return to Australia and compensated without delay," Senator Nettle said.
