Security Council Congratulates Liberians On Orderly Elections
New York, Oct 14 2005
Congratulating the large numbers of Liberians who participated in the recent elections, the United Nations Security Council today expressed the hope that the counting of ballots and the announcement of results later this month would take place smoothly and peacefully.
After Council members were briefed by Dmitry Titov of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations on Tuesday's presidential and legislative elections, this month's Council president, Ambassador Mihnea Ioan Motoc of Romania, emphasized the crucial role of a successful electoral process in establishing peace, stability and prosperity in the West African country.
Council members expressed appreciation for the dedicated and able efforts of Liberia's National Elections Commission, the peacekeeping UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and other multilateral and bilateral partners in preparing the elections, he said in a press statement.
Mr. Motoc said the Council called on all participants to maintain their commitment to non-violence and the democratic process through a second round of presidential elections, if one is necessary, and throughout the full electoral period.
