Message of condolence from President Barroso to President Musharraf
“It was with great distress and sadness that I learned about the tragic earthquake which shook northern regions of Pakistan on 8 October and resulted in very extensive loss of lives and destruction. On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to you Mr President and the people of Pakistan. Please convey my expression of deepest sympathy and solidarity to the families of the victims and all those affected by this calamity. Let me assure you that the European Union and the European Commission through its Humanitarian Aid Office stand ready to help Pakistan with urgent relief and assistance in this hour of need.”
Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, addressed the following message to Pakistan's Foreign Minister Kasuri: “I was shocked to hear news about Pakistan's worst-ever earthquake which according to latest reports has killed several thousand people and left many more injured and homeless. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and expression of deepest sympathy with the families of the victims affected by this horrible tragedy.”

"I was profoundly shocked to hear of yesterday’s terrible earthquake that hit parts of India, notably Kashmir, as well as Pakistan and Afghanistan. On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, allow me to express my deepest and most sincere condolences to the Government of India. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the victims' families and beloved ones. The European Commission stands ready to help and has offered assistance to all concerned countries. Let me also stress my personal appreciation of the support you immediately extended to your neighbouring country."

"My sincere condolences go to the victims and their families of the terrible earthquake that shook Jammu & Kashmir. In this moment of sorrow, let me assure you of all the sympathy and support of the European Commission.
