UN labour agency offers aid to US to help recovery from Hurricane Katrina
The International Labour Organization (ILO) has joined other United Nations agencies in offering assistance to the United States to help it recover from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina.
“As reconstruction proceeds, the measures being taken by the United States Department of Labour to help thousands of women and men to restart their lives through the dignity of work are critical,” ILO Director-General, Juan Somavia said in a statement.
“I have written to U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao to convey my personal sympathy, express solidarity with the American people and reaffirm the commitment that the ILO stands ready to put our experience and capacities to work in responding to the recovery and reconstruction effort in any appropriate way,” he added.
Teams from various UN agencies are already in the affected areas working with US officials and non-governmental organizations.
