Queen of Buganda To Visit Greenhouse School

SALEM, Ma - Royalty is coming to Salem! The Nnaabageereka (Queen) of Buganda, a Kingdom in East Africa comprising part of present-day Uganda, will be visiting The Greenhouse School in August, thanks to the Omutaka of the King of Buganda for the Boston district.

Omutaka Samuel Katwe Lugudde is Greenhouse School Assistant Director Julia Nambalirwa-Lugudde's father and Administrative Director Daniel Welch's father-in-law. Omutaka translates as 'personification, representative, or ambassador'.

"It is very exciting! It is an actual, legitimate royal visit, by far the most important guest we have hosted at the school," Welch said of the upcoming event.

Nnaabagereka (Queen) Sylvia Nagginda is married to Kabaka (King) Mutebi II of Buganda, the 36th ruling monarch of a dynasty reaching back to the early 14th century. Except for a brief period in Uganda's post-colonial "time of troubles," and a time in the 14th century when a series of caretaker regents scouted for an heir to the throne, this dynasty is an unbroken line lasting almost 700 years. Proud heirs to a rich and enduring culture, the Baganda have emigrated to countries around the world, where the Kabaka maintains diplomatic relations through the diaspora.

Julia Nambalirwa-Lugudde, known as "Ms. Julia" to her students, emigrated from Uganda in 1985. She assists in operating the school, along with her husband and her mother-in-law, Patricia Jennings-Welch, the founder of the school.

The Greenhouse School likes to call itself "a small school with a global reach," and boasts students, staff, and parents from over 50 countries throughout its 22-year history.

Over the next several weeks, the students will learn the Ugandan national anthem and the anthem of Baganda, while learning about the country's unique culture, food, music, language, and customs. Video footage of Greenhouse School events connected with this event is expected to be presented on Ugandan national television.
