UK Attack: British Home Secretary Statement

Published: Fri 8 Jul 2005 02:23 AM
Home Secretary Charles Clarke has made a statement on the explosions in London.
Mr Clarke confirmed that the blasts caused 'terrible casualties'. He also confirmed that the Underground network has been suspended and advised against unecessary journeys in the capital. The Metropolitan Police advice is to stay away from all public transport.
The public will be updated with the latest information as and when it is available, he said.
There've been a number of dreadful incidents across London today. The Cabinet have been kept informed of the situation as has the Prime Minister at Gleneagles. I chaired a meeting of our COBRA senior Ministers committee earlier on today to assess the situation and to decide what immediate action needs to be taken.
As far as the Police are concerned they are in operational command and dealing with the situation in accordance with very well established procedures in an extremely professional way. Health services are in support to deal with the terrible injuries that there have been and I want to express sympathy on behalf of the whole Government to the families and friends of those who have been injured.
And as far as transport's concerned underground services have been suspended and we advise people not to make unnecessary journeys in London at this stage in order to help the Police and other emergency services deal with the current situation.
I'll be making a statement to the House later on today to fully update the situation and throughout all of this and the terrible situation that is there we will be updating the public very directly at regular intervals with the most up to date information we have. Thank you very much, that's all I've got for now. Thank you.
