Moscow 2012 Bid Committee Welcomes International Olympic Committee Evaluation Commission Report

Moscow, 6 June 2005: Today Valery Shantsev, Moscow City Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Moscow 2012 Bid Committee, welcomed the IOC Evaluation Commission report and announced the publication of a new report by international consultancy BDO Unicon on the Moscow City Master Plan.

Since the Evaluation Commission's visit to Moscow in March, the Bid Committee has made even more progress with its plans and is looking forward to sharing their vision in Singapore on 6 July with all members of the IOC and the broader Olympic Family.

"Upon their departure from Moscow in March, the members of the Evaluation Commission rightly pointed out that "all cities are serious and strong bids and that there are no 'outsiders' in this race". The Evaluation Commission report confirms this and that each of the five wonderful bidding cities would host spectacular Games in 2012. But the choice of one of these cities would help change the world and a nation and impact both in an unparalleled manner. And in an ever more complex world, would also help to unite East and West. That historic choice is Moscow" said the Deputy Mayor.

"The selection of Moscow for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games would impact the new Russia and the entire world. No other nation has undergone such quick, positive and dramatic change - and as peacefully - as has Russia. Hosting the 2012 Games in Moscow would accelerate the pace of positive change in our country" he went on to say.

Moscow offers a unique Olympic River concept as the basis for its venue plan. For the first time, all Olympic events will be held within one city, so for the first time all athletes can live in the same Olympic Village. The quality of their experience, as well as their comfort, convenience and safety of the athletes are the guiding principles of the Moscow 2012 bid. In line with these guiding principles, the five main venue clusters are located along the Moscow River, within 5-10 kilometres of each other. Fully 65% of the venues are already in place and have proven their excellence for athletes by successfully hosting more than 100 World and European Championships since 1980.

"I am also pleased to see that today the international consultancy BDO has published the Executive Summary of a report on the Moscow City Master Plan. This plan sets out the infrastructure plans for the city including 210 new hotels, significant developments of our road infrastructure and public transport, a new sports complex, a new tennis centre and two new football stadiums. I am delighted that their report confirms that we are fully on schedule with our plans, that all the forecasts demonstrate that we will meet our goals by 2012 and that these well exceed the requirements of the IOC" remarked Deputy Mayor Shantsev.

"I can assure you that Moscow will plan and organise historic and spectacular Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 and that these Games will provide a unique legacy of which we can all be proud" concluded the Deputy Mayor.
