Settler Attacks Increase 52 per cent
Latest figures released by the Israeli Army reveal that there has been a notable increase in attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, especially in the cities and villages located near Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
The Israeli newspaperMaarivreported that settler attacks on Palestinians had increased by 52 per cent and that this year, from January to April, more than 265 cases had been opened against settlers for exercising violence against Palestinians. This compares with 174 cases between January and April 2004. The most recent of these assaults came from the illegal Israeli settlement Qidomim, built on the land of Kufor Qaddoum, east of Qalqilya, where settlers poisoned the town’s wells, rendering the water undrinkable and useless for livestock and crops.

The Arts, the Academy, Activism Islam for the 21^st Century
Dr. Omar Nahas,
YOESUF INTERNATIONAL
& Centre for Islam in Europe -
University of Ghent - Belgium
At the beginning of the 21^st century, Islam became a hot item on the global agenda; on the one hand some opinion makers see Islam as a danger for world safety and on the other hand millions of Muslims refuse to be associated with religious extremism and fundamentalism. Both are aiming for a new form of Islam that is compatible with the needs of the world in the era of globalisation.
The academy, social activism and adult education are needed for constructing progressive Islam.
