UN Worker, Two Others Killed in Afghan Blast
New York, May 9 2005 8:00AM
Condemning a suspected suicide bombing which killed a United Nations worker and two others in Afghanistan over the weekend, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today urged measures to combat insecurity in the war-ravaged country.
Mr. Annan's reaction followed an explosion at an internet cafe in Kabul in the early evening of 8 May. Among those killed was an international contractor working for the UN Office for Project Services. At least six Afghan nationals were injured.
"The Secretary-General is concerned about the increase in violence witnessed in recent weeks," a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement, calling on the Afghan Government, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force for Afghanistan (ISAF), and the coalition forces to take the necessary measures to address the security situation.
