Mourning the death of Prince Rainier III of Monaco, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today paid tribute to the monarch as a man who had won the world’s respect.
“Throughout his 55-year reign, and all the changes the country underwent during that time, Prince Rainier remained dearly loved by his people, and deeply respected by his peers as well as the world community,” Mr. Annan said in a message of condolences released by his spokesman on the prince’s death.
“The Secretary-General wishes Prince Albert every courage and fortitude as he succeeds his father at the helm of the principality,” the statement added, referring to Prince Rainier’s son and heir.
