TEAR Fund swings into action in Indonesia

Aid and relief organisation TEAR Fund New Zealand is responding to the earthquake in Indonesia through the provision of emergency rations, supplies and shelter.

TEAR Fund partner World Relief is coordinating disaster relief efforts on the Indonesian islands of Nias and Simeleu, situated closest to the epicenter of Monday's earthquake. Immediate efforts include the provision of food, medicine and 160 tents.

At 11.09pm on March 28, an 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Sumatra, causing panic in a region where people are just beginning to recover from the December 26 earthquake and tsunami.

As many as 2,000 people are feared to have died and many more are believed trapped under rubble, according to Indonesian officials.
