Peaceful Protest against Illegal Road Construction
Peaceful Protest against Illegal Road Construction in Hebron
[Hebron, West Bank] Tuesday, February 1 at
11am, Palestinians from Khalet Adar in the Qalqas area of
Hebron, with the support of international and Israeli
activists, will protest the construction of a new
settlement bypass road by planting trees in place of those
that have been uprooted in the past days. On Sunday January
30 more than 300 trees were uprooted in the area.
Volunteers with the International Solidarity Movement and Israeli Anarchists against the Wall will stand with the people from Khalet Adar to prevent the bulldozers from continuing the destruction of Palestinian land for the construction of the illegal bypass road.
Construction of the new road began in the area of Khalet Adar two weeks ago but was halted one week later following an Israeli Supreme Court decision to stop construction for 21 days. Despite this ruling, construction workers resumed work in a different location near the village late last week. Last Friday, hundreds of villagers held their Friday prayers in the location of the planned route of the road in peaceful protest of this blatant land confiscation.
If built, this new road will connect the two illegal Israeli settlements of Kiryat Arba and Hagai. In the Hebron district alone there are more than 120 kilometers of bypass roads connecting the Israeli settlements with one other and with Israel. In effect these roads carve up the Palestinians areas into isolated ghettos.
