Iraq: Anniversary of UN bombing in Baghdad

Iraq: Anniversary of UN bombing in Baghdad

Amnesty International joins the United Nations (UN) in mourning the loss of 22 members of their staff in Iraq exactly a year ago. The UN staff who were killed in a suicide attack in Baghdad, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, dedicated themselves profoundly to work for the protection of the values of the UN and upholding human rights in Iraq.

Amnesty International extends their deepest sympathy to the colleagues, family and friends of those killed and whose work will never be forgotten.

Remembering their death today, we urge all those concerned with the protection of human rights in Iraq -- within and outside the country -- to pay tribute to their memory. Their legacy should be honoured through the continuous struggle for the protection of human rights. This struggle must be placed at the forefront of national and international efforts towards the country's reconstruction.
