Further Iraqi Army Officers To Study In Australia

Further Iraqi Army Officers To Study In Australia

Another two members of the Iraqi Armed Forces will attend courses at the Australian Defence College next year, Defence Robert Hill announced today.

"This is another facet of our support to the Interim Iraqi Government in its commitment to developing a strong, professional and effective Iraqi Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence," Senator Hill said.

"It will also continue to develop professional ties between the Australian Defence Force and the Iraqi Army - ties being forged now between our deployed Iraqi Army Training Team members and their Iraqi counterparts.

"The Australian Defence College initiative complements the Army and Navy training ADF members are providing in Iraq and contributes to the longer-term aim of developing a professional Iraqi Armed Forces."

All overseas students at the Australian Defence College - there are three Iraqi students undertaking courses this year - have the opportunity to interact with senior officers from Australia and develop professional networks with officers from other defence forces.

The Iraqi students attending the Australian Defence College learn lessons regarding military history, strategy and defence policy. They receive professional education in leadership development, the conduct of military operations and military doctrine and build their skills in management, communication and training. The courses also involve syndicate work, individual research and an overseas study tour.

Upon their return, these officers will be able to draw on their Australian experience as they contribute towards an Iraqi military organisation that is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the defence of Iraq. "Australia is proud to support the Iraqi military as they gradually build up their own professional forces whose mission is to protect the Iraqi people and provide long-term stability for their country," said Senator Hill.
