Though the echoes and emotions have yet to fade from the massive May 1st demonstration at Revolution Square, an event in which more than a million Cuban citizens gathered in a show of unity and support for the Revolution, the people of Havana will again take to the streets this coming Friday in a enormous protest march.
The site of the upcoming demonstration will be the emblematic Malecón seaside drive, where on so many other occasions Cubans have shown to the world, and to the imperial US office overlooking the promenade, their unyielding resolve to defend the nation, the Revolution and socialism - at any cost.
The present occupant of the White House’s Oval Office-moved as he is by the same desire to subdue the Cuban people through need and deprivation as his Spanish colonial predecessors one hundred years ago-will clearly see that Cubans firmly reject the brutal measures contained in his recently announced "imperial decree," for which he will receive only greater resentment and contempt from the residents of this island.
If one thing can now be predicted - after more than 45 years of criminal aggression - it is that Cubans will unify and rally even more closely alongside the leaders of the Revolution, headed by Commander Fidel Castro.
The authors of the fascist anti-Cuban document and Miami’s ultra-right have forgotten that several generations of Cubans have enjoyed for almost a half century now life in a society guided by social justice and sovereignty, which they will not resign themselves to lose it.
Those who have known and enjoyed those achievements will not surrender such wealth; they are not willing to be humiliated, and they will never accept to be put on their knees. On countless occasions, Cubans have shown their iron will to uphold their independence; they will soon reaffirm and express that determination yet again.
There should be no doubts: on Friday, the protest against Bush's policies and the steadfast position of the people of Havana to stand up to these latest threats will be conclusive.
